Why was this study done?
The health benefits of a plant-based diet are many. This study was designed to investigate the effects of replacing animal protein (milk) with vegetable-based protein (soy) during a weight loss program to see the effects of both diets on blood lipids (cholesterol, LDL, HDL).
What did the study find?
During the twelve-week study, an average of 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs.) were lost on a 1000 kcal diet where two meals were replaced with either a milk or a soy drink. Those participants who were on the soy diet had a significant reduction in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels.
