Why was this study done? From many population-based studies, there appears to be a relationship between vitamin D status and cardiovascular disease. This study was designed to help further the knowledge of this relationship.
What did the study find? There was a strong relationship between the amount of serum vitamin D measured in 257 volunteers and symptoms of metabolic syndrome and HDL cholesterol levels.
Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is independently associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the metabolic syndrome in men and women. Authors: Maki KC, Rubin MR, Wong LG, McManus JF, Jensen CD, Marshall JW, Lawless A. J Clin Lipidol. 2009 Aug;3(4):289-96.
